Choosing The Right Bike For Your Child

Posted on June 15, 2011 by saurabh sahni

For a child, his first bike will be a very important object of his life. It will be something that he truly loves and something he will remember and cherish for a long time. Not only will a bike provide a healthy and fun recreation, it will also help the child to build his confidence. Nowadays children are getting used to a bad lifestyle as more video games and computers enter the society. This is leading to obesity at a very young age as well as other health risks such as heart diseases. The children are missing out on the great outdoors. Regular cycling improves the child’s lifestyle and keeps him healthy.

Choosing the right bike for a child can be a difficult task for a parent due to all the different bikes available on the market. If your child is a toddler and it is his first bike then the best way to go is to buy the child a balance bike. These bikes are different from conventional bikes as they come without pedals and stabilizer wheels. This way the child can learn to push the bike and steer and learn how to balance. This concept of bikes for younger children has proven to be faster as the stabilizers change the nature of a bike to that of a tricycle and it becomes difficult for the child to understand the idea of balancing. There are a lot of Balance bikes on the market and they are available in different constructions. The bikes may be of wood, hard plastic or aluminum. You can visit your local bike store where the people will be able to help you out in picking the right bike for your child. The best method is to let the child choose what he wants, some designs and colors may be more appealing to him. The bikes come in a variety of designs and the weight of the bike is an important factor. Check if the child can reach the handlebars without much effort. The height of the bike should be proper for the child and enable his feet to reach the ground comfortably. Proper ergonomics is essential to make an enjoyable ride.

Some of the bestselling Balance bikes today are;

Skuut Balance Bike: built for kids ages 2-5. It is light weight, weighing in at around 12 pounds, has adjustable seats, and the frame is made of wood. It is priced at around $90.
Hobby Bike: built for kids ages 2-5. It is made with aluminum and features a unique design. The bike comes with removable pedals and chain system. It weighs 22 pounds and is priced at $130.
